Description: The Origins of Good Work project explores how young people think about the meaning and importance of work in their lives. Through personal interviews and a “value sorting task,” the reasons why young people engage in their work, what they hope to get out of it, the benefits and rewards of their participation, and the challenges they face were uncovered. This paper draws on interviews with individuals between the ages of sixteen and twenty one. At this point in their lives, these young people face critical choices about their futures: attending college, continuing in their activity as a hobby or as a profession, or committing to an entirely different area of work. The analysis focuses on how the aspiring young journalists in this group confront these decisions. It discusses: 1) emergent trends from the study of young journalists, 2) implementation efforts, and 3) connections of the research to the overarching GoodWork® study.
