Description: This paper examines the partisan ethic of lawyers, which is characteristic of the adversarial system. One of the findings suggests that this partisan ethic influences how lawyers in the criminal justice system have varied perceptions of justice, and how the criminal justice system itself reinforces these contradictory views. Our paper suggests that when defense attorneys, who see the system as inherently unfair, and prosecutor,s who focus on punishment and accountability, are willing to change roles in mid-career, this shift adds an expanded perspective to their work and both amplifies their views of justice and supports greater nuances of fairness within the criminal justice system.
